Saoirse Ronan’s Golden Globe win for Lady Bird charmed millions watching the awards at home in January, but for Greg Williams, the best moment of the actress’s win happened offstage.
“Saoirse had just collected her Golden Globe, and she immediately started FaceTiming with her loved ones,” the photographer said. “I seek out that genuine and honest moment where nothing is contrived.”
Finding balance between observation and participation was Williams’s top priority while photographing the swirl of awards season for the cover portfolio of Vanity Fair’s latest Awards Extra, featuring Frances McDormand, Ronan, Laurie Metcalf, Denzel Washington, Sally Hawkins, and more.
“I was excited by the thought of being able to do what I do at such a star-studded forum,” Williams said. “You feel like you’re in a bubble.”
As the Academy Awards draws nearer, this issue, currently making its way to voters’ mailboxes, aims to bring readers into that bubble as well. “It is about participation, where you see familiarity between the subject and photographer,” he said. “I try to take photographs that make the viewer feel like they breathe the same air.”
