Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon will soon be on the big screen together in Disney’s anticipated A Wrinkle In Time.
But long before it was a big-screen adaptation, Madeleine L’Engle’s novel was attracting publicity for being a remarkably controversial book.
In fact, A Wrinkle In Time has been banned a number of times.
Why was A Wrinkle In Time banned?
Released in 1962, it is a book with devoted readers who have been excitedly waiting for the movie’s release.
It has won a number of awards too, including the Newbery Medal, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award and the Sequoyah Book Award. It was also the runner-up in the Hans Christian Andersen Awards.
But despite its high critical acclaim – and its positive message about embracing individuality – the book sits uneasy with some and has been banned a number of times due to its contents.
According to the Office for Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association, A Wrinkle In Time – about children in search of their father – has featured in the top 100 banned or challenged books over the last few decades.
Conservative Christians have campaigned against the content of the book, which features magical and fantastical elements, being taught in schools, often trying to avoid books about magic being shown to children.
Some also find the way Madeleine, who was 44 when the book was released, writes about religion to be disagreeable. The book compares Jesus to other figures, such as Gandhi, Buddha and Einstein – there is an implication Jesus is not a divine figure.
Upon her death in 2007, The Guardian reported how one critic of L’Engle’s once said: ‘Madeline (sic) L’Engle teaches universalism in her books and denigrates organised Christianity and promotes an occultic world view.’
When quizzed on these controversies in 2001, an 83-year-old L’Engle didn’t seem too bothered by the assertions, telling the New York Times: ‘It seems people are willing to damn the book without reading it. Nonsense about witchcraft and fantasy.
‘First I felt horror, then anger, and finally I said, “Ah, the hell with it.” It’s great publicity, really.’
As well as Disney’s upcoming 2018 adaptation, Disney previously adapted the book into a TV movie in 2003.
