Coronation Street is set to air a harrowing experience for David Platt tonight as he is drugged and raped by Josh Tucker in a powerful and controversial storyline that hopes to highlight the struggles men face in the wake of sexual assault both with speaking out and their mental health.
Josh has been grooming David as his best friend, playing on the fact that David hasn’t got any real male mates. David has latched onto him in a big way, much to Shona Ramsey’s irritation but things take a dark turn when they head for a night out.
As the drinks flow, David starts opening up about his past, condemning his dad Martin for not being there for him and also confiding in Josh that Richard Hillman tried to kill his entire family. Josh speaks about his own upbringing too and it appears that they are building a solid friendship.
However, when David heads to the toilet, Josh drugs his drink and then invites him back to the flat. By the time David arrives, he is feeling groggy and unsteady and Josh waits for him to practically pass out before pulling him through to the bedroom.
David is only able to weakly try and resist but Josh isn’t listening. Coronation Street don’t show the attack but it is clear what Josh’s intentions are and the aftermath will focus on the impact of David’s health. With 1 in 10 rapes believed to be against a male victim, the show is hoping to raise awareness of the devastating issue.
And in the wake of his trauma, David will go off the rails in a big way.
Coronation Street airs the episode on Friday 16th March at 8:30pm on ITV.
