FRIDAY UPDATE: Continuing to pummel milestones, Disney/Marvels Avengers: Infinity War sped past the $900M global mark on Thursday with a running cume of $905.1M worldwide — and in just nine days of release. The international box office for Thursday came in with $32M which includes a record Day One start in Russia. The total overseas tally through yesterday is $566.7M. Infinity War will cross $1B globally on Saturday, possibly late today. Either way, thats a record for quickest to the benchmark.
Russias Thursday opening was $4.9M for the biggest industry debut day of all time. Infinity War is also the first movie in that market to ever sell more than 1M tickets in a single day.
The UK still leads offshore play with $53.7M through Thursday, followed by Korea ($53.1M), Mexico ($39.9M), Brazil ($33.5M) and a stunning India cume of $30.1M.
Yesterday saw Joe and Anthony Russos Avengers assemble a worldwide gross that jumps ahead of the global lifetimes of Spider-Man 3 ($891M), Spider-Man: Homecoming ($880M), Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice ($874M) and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2 ($854M).
THURSDAY UPDATE, writethru: Disney/Marvels Avengers: Infinity War has now topped $850M globally with $857.3M through Wednesday. The international box office portion of that is $534.7M off of a $32.2M haul in 52 offshore hubs yesterday. Thats a 50% drop from the offshore Tuesday take which had been boosted by the May Day holiday in many markets. This drop was expected.
Still, short of Thanos arriving on Earth with a gauntlet to thwart moviegoing, this Joe and Anthony Russo-helmed juggernaut is set for a speed record to $1B worldwide on Saturday.
The Avengers and their brethren are currently pacing 74% above Captain America: Civil War and +66% versus Avengers: Age Of Ultron.
The UK has switched places with Korea as the lead market with $51.3M through Wednesday. Korea is keeping up at $50.9M. Following those in the Top 5 are Mexico ($38.3M), Brazil ($31.6M) and India at $28.3M. It cannot be stressed how this movie is performing in the latter which is a 90% local market. The last time an import had such resonance was with Disneys The Jungle Book.
Globally on Wednesday, the Infinity stones passed Thor: Ragnarok ($854M), Wonder Woman ($822M) and Spider-Man ($822M).
WEDNESDAY UPDATE, writethru: More milestones have fallen with Disney/Marvels Avengers: Infinity War crossing $800M globally on Tuesday. The total through yesterday is now $808.4M. Whats more, the heroes pounced past $500M at the international box office with $502.5M to date.
Domestic, as reported earlier, crossed $300M ($305.9M) in only five days to tie Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the fastest film to the threshold. As we noted yesterday (see below), Infinity War is due to set a new speed record to $1B worldwide, likely Friday or Saturday, beating TFAs 12-days to the benchmark. Both films will have reached the mark without China in the mix.
Yesterdays May Day holiday in many overseas hubs helped IW crush a $64.5M Tuesday. That reps 20% of the opening weekend. (Force Awakens first international Tuesday was worth 17% of its debut frame.)
Korea has rushed ahead of the UK as the current offshore leader with $48.7M. The UK through Tuesday is at $48.3M, followed by Mexico ($36.4M), Brazil ($28.4M) and India ($26M). That last market is just astounding — India is not a regular in the Top 5 on a Hollywood film.
In further achievements, yesterday saw Infinity War pass the global lifetimes of Spider-Man 2 ($784M), Deadpool ($783M), Guardians of the Galaxy ($773M), The Amazing Spider-Man ($758M), X-Men: Days of Future Past ($748M) and Suicide Squad ($747M).
Before Russia opens tomorrow, and ahead of China on May 11, Joe and Anthony Russos blockbuster is pacing 77% above Captain America: Civil War and 66% above Avengers: Age Of Ultron in like-for-like overseas markets.
PREVIOUS, TUESDAY: Disney/Marvels Avengers: Infinity War has blasted past the $700M global mark with $725.5M through Monday. We can expect milestones to continue to fall throughout this week: $800M should hit with todays numbers added, and $1B worldwide is coming this weekend — possibly through Friday which would be 10 days in release. Anything under 12 days to $1B would see Infinity War become the fastest movie to the benchmark, taking a light saber to Star Wars: The Force Awakens which currently holds the record.
After six days in release at the international box office, the offshore total is $443.1M. IW is currently supercharging 67% ahead of Captain America: Civil War and 58% above Avengers: Age Of Ultron overseas. Domestically, the Anthony and Joe Russo juggernaut is at $282.4M.
The offshore Monday was worth $60.3M in 52 material markets. Thats 19% of the opening weekend and is 2% above the first Monday for The Force Awakens back during the 2015 Christmas season. In many hubs on Monday (and again today), Thanos is taking advantage of the May Day holiday.
The UK continues to lead international markets with $45.5M, followed by Korea ($43.3M), Mexico ($30.8M), Australia ($24.9M), Brazil ($23.7M), India ($22.5M), France ($20.6M), Germany ($18.6M), the Philippines ($14M) and Italy ($13.4M).
Also on Monday, the Avengers assembled worldwide gross passed the lifetimes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($714M), Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($709M), Doctor Strange ($678M), Man Of Steel ($668M), Justice League ($658M) and Thor: The Dark World ($645M). Over the weekend, it had already exceeded the entire runs of Iron Man 2, Logan, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and The Incredible Hulk.
