K-pop doesnt really do subtle – and by that token, its no surprise that one of the top bands has 18 members.
The South Korean mega-group NCT is so enormous that it has three sub-units – smaller, more manageable bands for those who cant stomach 18 hipsters at once.
But who the hell are all their members, how old are they and what sub-units are they divided in to?
The full band title for NCT (엔시티) is Neo Culture Technology, and their managers are SM Entertainment.
Their debut album NCT 2018 Empathy came out in March 2018, but the units themselves also release their own singles and albums.
NCTs 18 members are Taeil, Chenle, Jonny, Taeyong, Mark, Yuta, Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun, Winwin, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Jisung, Jungwoo, Lucas and Kun (the last three being the newest additions).
The youngest two of the band (Chenle and Jisung) are just 16 years old, while Johnny and Taeil are the oldest at 23 years old.
The three NCT sub-units are:
- NCT U – A group with a rotating line-up, currently consisting of 10 members: Taeil, Taeyong, Doyoung, Ten, Jaehyun, Winwin, Jungwoo, Lucas, Kun, and Mark.
- NCT 127 – Fixed unit with 9 members from Seoul (127 is the region code), who are Taeyong, Taeil, Johnny, Yuta, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark and Haechan.
- NCT Dream – Rotating line-up unit made of the youngest members, currently these 7: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung.
As with most K-pop bands, the individual members are successful artists in their own right, even the ones that are just 16.
Some of the members specialise in rap while others sing, and theyre all generally incredibly good at dancing.
Lee Soo-Man who formed the band says the concept is that there are no limits to how many members can join or what country theyre from.
Eventually its expected that other parts of Asia will be represented in the band and sub-units based on where theyre all from will form.
Its enough to give Blazin Squad a complex, really.
