When Moira Dingle came face to face with her son Matty Barton, its fair to say that there was a rocky reception as she struggled to get her head around the fact that he was no longer her daughter Hannah. But Emmerdale star Natalie J Robb has confirmed that theres hope on the horizon for the pair as they will start to bond and rebuild the relationship.
The soap cast transgender actor Ash Palmisciano to play the role and the storyline has gone down a storm with viewers – although some were left disappointed by Moiras angry and upset attitude to Mattys revelation.
But Natalie has reasoned that her response isnt too unexpected. She explained: It was a total jaw dropper. The bigger shock for Moira was that he kept this a secret – she felt she had failed as a mother and has taken it all very personally that he felt he couldnt come to her.
Shes grieving. She feels she has missed out on so much and now, all of a sudden, Hannah is someone else, a stranger.
However, Moira gets a massive wake up call when Matty is viciously attacked and ends up in hospital. As she races to visit him, she is full of the fear that she could have lost him and determines to set things right.
She added to TV Times Magazine: Theres always hope with Moira. It will be like starting from scratch. She does say to Matty: “Im learning so dont expect me to get it right all the time. But youre my baby and Ill always try.”
We filmed a scene recently where Matty and Moira go out together for the first time. Moira overhears a conversation and gets the wrong end of the stick and snaps in true Moira style.
