Emmerdales Graham Foster was left totally alone tonight after Joe dismissed him.
The village has seen its fair share of break ups but this professional parting was as gut wrenching as the worst of them.
Graham woke in Home Farm, finally sober, after his drunken rampage through the village the previous day. He was confused by his bloody knuckles and called out for Joe.
A disheveled Graham made his way to the village. But it wasnt long before the people hed lashed out at reminded him of his actions. In the cafe Megan told him he looked terrible and then she realised that Graham remembered very little of what had happened.
Graham apologised to Frank and then to Chas and Cain, who dropped in and told him that hed tried to shove a pregnant Chas the previous day. Graham continued with his apologies but Chas told him that sorry wouldnt cut it – he was barred from her pub.
Graham asked where Joe was, as he hadnt come home last night. An annoyed Cain explained that Joe had gone looking for Graham. Grahams eyes widened – had he remembered?
Joe had, thankfully, survived the brutal beating Graham had given him. Graham found Joe bloody and limping up a road. He pleaded with Joe to get in the car.
A furious Joe lashed out at Graham and said that he couldnt go to hospital because the doctors would ask awkward questions. He insisted that Graham patch him up. Then, Joe said, they would talk.
Back at Home Farm Joes anger grew. He felt betrayed. Graham explained that the anniversary of his familys death resurrected painful memories but Joe remained upset. Joe asked Graham how he could trust him again.
Graham promised to get help and even made arrangements to stay at a rehab clinic that specialised in treating ex-squaddies. Joe poured a drink and offered Graham one. Graham resisted the test but Joe was disgusted at the temptation he could see in his eyes.
When a worried Megan dropped by to check on Graham, she pleaded with Joe not to turn Graham away. She told Joe that he was the only person Graham trusted and cared for.
But Joe was unmoved. Before Graham left for rehab, Joe told Graham that he was the closest thing he had to a father. Graham said that Joe was like a son to him.
But Joe couldnt forgive him. The businessmans voice cracked just a little, when he said that Graham shouldnt return after the treatment. Joe never wanted to see him again.
A devastated Graham finally walked away from Joe.
But is this the last weve seen of Graham or will he return to the village? Joe and Graham have a fascinating relationship, so we can only hope so.
