Hollyoaks is to air a special single strand episode on World Mental Health Day which will focus on a significant point in Cleo McQueens ongoing bulimia storyline. Since the start of the year, viewers have seen Cleo in the grips of the destructive eating disorder but as things get worse, a light will be shone on the issue during an episode with a difference.
While we cant reveal specific details, Metro.co.uk were on set with the Hollyoaks team as they filmed the episode and Nadine Mulkerrin, who plays the central star, revealed that the script goes between three different versions of the same story and not everything is as it seems.
She explained: The episode is intercut with different versions of the same day for Cleo. The writing is so good – there are three versions of the story that she tells; she is totally in denial. Bryan gave me a little nod that something exciting was coming up – when I heard about it, I knew it was going to be amazing and I couldnt wait to film it.
When I realised that the crescendo of the bulimia storyline comes on World Mental Health Day, I knew the episode would be special. Hollyoaks always treat these big issue led storylines with great sensitivity.
Whether Joel Dexter can be there for his fiancee as she battles another big challenge in her life remains to be seen but viewers are in for an emotional half an hour of television that will likely have an impact in the same way that Alfie Nightingales recent standalone episode had.
Hollyoaks is known for constantly tackling difficult real life issues as part of their narrative with topics such as depression, self harm and abuse forming a part of their #DontFilterFeelings campaign.
World Mental Health Day is on Wednesday 10th October and the episode will air at 6:30pm on Channel 4. The first look will be on the previous day at 7pm on E4.
