Two suspects were shot, one fatally, during a police investigation into a gun deal in Newark Wednesday evening, officials say.

Newark police and the Essex County sheriff's office were conducting a joint probe focusing on gun sales when they tried to pull over the suspects' car near Lyons Avenue and Bergen Street, law enforcement sources said.

The driver tried to use the car as a weapon and get away, and that's when police started firing, the sources said. One man was taken to the hospital and is under police watch. The other died on the scene, and an hours-long standoff followed.

Police discovered the man was dead after sending a robot towards the car. Sources said weapons were discovered in the car.

Witness James Shaw said he drove right into the scene Wednesday afternoon. Police stormed the vehicle behind him, and "I heard these guys say, 'Pull up,' guns pointed, 'Get out of the car now, hands up in the air.'"

Shaw said the driver behind him smashed into the back of his truck, and "next thing I know, I started hearing shots, sounded like hundreds of shots fired, and what I did was just duck as low as I could in my truck while all these shots were firing."

He saw a man on the ground hit by gunfire: "He was shot, blood everywhere, saying 'I need help, I need help.'"

Family members identified the man who died as Paul Braswell, and say he's related to some Newark police officers. Police spent the evening Wednesday outside Braswell's family home on a street near the crime scene bearing their name.

Newark's mayor wouldn't elaborate on much at a news conference Wednesday, confirming only there were two suspects and that there were guns at the scene, and one person was in custody and the other dead.
