After a long, long, long wait, Marvel finally dropped the first trailer – and title reveal – for the upcoming fourth Avengers film on Friday but it turns out it may have actually given away more than planned.
Time travel has long been considered to be the key ingredient in Avengers 4 (sorry, Avengers: Endgame) thanks in part to older costumes weve seen in set pictures and the idea that somehow half of our dead superheroes have to return.
Directing duo the Russo Brothers have been clever enough to avoid offering any direct spoilers or clues about what we may get in the upcoming film, which will close a chapter on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and end the stories of several of our favourite heroes, including Iron Man and Captain America.
But the very final scene in the trailer may hint at the direction the film will take, as eagle-eyed fans have noticed that the CCTV footage of Scott Lang aka Ant-Man outside the Marvel compound actually appears to be archival footage from 1983.
Is this an old message? asks Captain America, as he and Black Widow watch Scott try to remind them who he is.
Black Widow then responds: Thats the front door.
The footage of Scott seems to be present day but a closer look shows the top left corner reads archive and has the date 1983.
A look at the surroundings as well suggests that the compound is run down, and the leaves suggest a different time of year compared to the earlier shot of the lush green trees.
But the lack of context with this scene between Natasha and Steve means that we could in fact be seeing Scott in the present day off screen trying to prove he has the ability to time travel by showing them the clip, or perhaps Natasha and Steve discovering there is the mode of time travel available to them (could the earlier scene of them insisting its going to work be a discussion of their upcoming travel?)
So, what does this mean?
As we know, during the post-credits scene at the end of Ant-Man And The Wasp Scott was left suspended in the Quantum Realm as Hope, Janet and Hank all perished in Thanos Snap.
The 1983 tag means that Scott could have travelled back in time, perhaps by falling into a time vortex – which Janet had already warned him against before he entered the realm – giving him the ability to travel through time to track down members of S.H.I.E.L.D.
How he got the van and the machine with him however means that we need to dig a little deeper; perhaps he actually travels into the future, finds the van, and his daughter (now an adult scientist) who is able to help him travel back in time and this video footage is from one jump of many – because he is talking specifically to Steve and referencing the events of Germany and Civil War perhaps Scott doesnt realise at this point he is in 1983.
This theory also offers explanations for why weve seen John Slattery – who plays Howard Stark – on set as perhaps Scott goes too far back in time in his quest to track down help, and it of course offers a way for the Avengers to defeat Thanos by using the Quantum technology to go back in time and save the universe.
Avengers: Endgame hits cinemas 26 April 2019.
