A big stunt airing next year will lead to a very special mental health focused episode for Carla Connor in Coronation Street.
The roof of the factory is set to collapse in a huge stunt, and the ramifications of the disaster will be huge; jobs will be lost, there could be financial ruin for some, and itll even go as far as taking one Weatherfield residents life.
The shockwaves will be felt for months afterwards, and at first it may appear that the collapse is an accident, but well quickly learn someone was behind it. But who is being kept a closely guarded secret.
Speaking to metro.co.uk, show producer Iain MacLeod has revealed how badly the turn of events will impact on Carlas mental health, which will spawn a special stand alone episode.
Our viewers will know its a whodunit quite early in the iteration of the story, but our characters dont, he told us. Somebody operating in the shadows has done this thing. The early stages of this story will see Carla as a massive pariah. That will trigger a massive story for Carla actually. It impacts massively on Carlas mental health.
Its a standalone episode that will be mental health focused and Carla focused. It will also be the reveal to the audience of who was behind the factory roof collapsing. Its a really nice fusion of important, serious drama about mental health.
Speaking of the collapse, Iain revealed that the after effects will be a slow burn as the devastation slowly spreads throughout Weatherfield, leading to the crowning of the next big villain.
He said: It plays out over four or five months. The resolution of a whodunit is so fundamental to the enjoyment of a viewer, so we want to keep that under wraps.
Its a community story – everyone is out of a job temporarily, lots of financial and lifestyle stories spinning off from it. They emerge from the big incident. It will have ripples that extend into the next six to 12 months and will eventually see the coronation of our next super villain. This is the beginning of creating the next iteration of the Corrie bad guy.

When pressed for more details Iain kept tight lipped, but he added that the ripple effect of the factory collapse will be huge.
Carla feels correctly that everybody is out to get her and that spirals off into a slightly delusional sense that everybody. Id hesitate to put a diagnosis on it but in short, this factory collapse story has lots of unexpected off-shoots into areas that give our amazing cast a chance to show off their acting chops.
The stunt is set to take place in March so watch this space as things start to unfold.
