Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor will star alongside her father in a never-before-done lesbian love story.

The film, called El Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, which translates to How I Felt When I Saw that Girl, will be the first time that a same-sex love story will make it to the big screens in India, and its set to be a beautiful feature, if the trailer is anything to go by.

Anil Kapoor will be reprising his real-life role as her father in the feature, which is being hailed for embracing a same-sex romance in cinemas.

The film marks an important moment in Indias LGBT history: In July the countrys Supreme Court overturned Section 377 and decriminalised gay sex.

While there is still a way to go before gay marriages can become the norm, it is a crucial step in the right direction for the country.

It is with this in mind that Sonam Kapoor will be playing Sweety Chaudhary, who rejects a number of men who her family try to thrust on her to marry because shes secretly in love with a woman called Kuku, played by Regina Cassandra.

The trailer shows how Kapoors character clashes with her upbringing and Punjabi family over the suitors, and eventually, her sexuality.

Classed as a romantic comedy, the feature will likely be light-hearted and feel good in equal measure.

The film has the same name as Anil Kapoors song from the 1994 movie 1942: A Love Story.

In an interview with Latestly, Sonam said she chose the film specifically for the story.

I was very skeptical [of being in] a film with my father, she revealed. We have been approached for films several times.

I said yes to Shelly Chopra [the director] as I loved the story and I felt this is the film that dad and I should do together. I was enthusiastic about the film.

She added that she trusted the director.

I never found authenticity or idealism in any of the other films. I felt nobody besides me and my father were suited to do [it].

Kapoor has spoken out in support of LGBT equalities in the past. In 2014 she criticised the now overturned Section 377.

She said it is completely okay to be gay and emphasised the importance of films. Movies can influence the ay people think sometimes, and if we do start making love stories…I think people will start appreciating them more.

The film will be released in India on 1 February 2019.
