As you would expect, Childish Gambinos epic tour show at Londons O2 Arena was filled with the unexpected.
And sadly, it was to be his last with the artist, also known as Donald Glover, confirming the This Is America tour is his grand farewell to music, presumably to focus on his blossoming acting career.
But when you can so effortlessly rouse that much energy in one room, the mind boggles as to why Childish Gambino would want to give it all up.
Its truly a great loss to music but he can be somewhat forgiven after putting on an unforgettable spectacle in London before his early retirement.
Moments after arriving on-stage, Gambino declared this is a church and boy, did he take us there.
Topless, of course, he twizzled and near enough twerked his way through the setlist, a perfect mix of his best work from throwback jams like V.3005 to newer cuts from the Grammy-nominated album Awaken, My Love!.
Gambino has the knack of weaving in between stunningly haunting numbers like Terrified to the nostalgic soul of Redbone and the gritty undertones of This Is America, with each representation of his artistry just as atmospheric as the last.
His musical talents are undeniable – those piercing falsettos are nothing short of perfection – but his innovation and ability to inspire awe with even the simplest stunt is second to none.
Halfway through the show, Gambino disappeared from the stage but he wasnt off for a wardrobe change.
And lets face it, what would he change other than his trousers?
Suddenly he reappeared on the screens, cameras following him as he walked to an unknown destination somewhere in the arena.
Only, it wasnt a random location but the middle of the audience. Gambino, so coolly, walked down the steps with his adoring fans desperate to touch him (but blocked by countless security guards).
A musical resurrection if ever there was one – he did say he was taking us to church after all.
It was even more obvious we were in the presence of greatness by the way his loyal followers raised their hands like theyd just heard the gospel every time he hit those seemingly impossible notes.
More: Childish Gambino
With his gospel well and truly heard, the only thing left on my mind at the end of the night was: He must save a pretty penny on wardrobe expenses – no one rocks the topless look quite like him.
