Taylor Swift has dropped her new single, You Need To Calm Down, and given an epic shout out to GLAAD and the Equality Act.
The 29-year-olds new song was released at 5am on Friday 14 June with a lyric video that revealed she sings you are somebody that we dont know, but youre comin at my friends like a missile, Why are you mad when you could be GLAAD?
She later used the video to highlight the E and A letters in the words seats, peace and scream.
In recent weeks Taylor has come out in support of the Equality Act for the LGBT community.
It is currently gong through the Senate and if passed would amend the Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity across various sectors, including employment, housing and education.
Releasing an open letter directed at her senator, Tennessees Lamar Alexander, the Look What You Made Me Do star encouraged him to support the Equality Act which would provide support and protection for LGBT people.
Attached was a second letter to her fans, encouraging them to follow her lead. She told them: Our countrys lack of protection for its own citizens ensures that LGBTQ people must live in fear that their lives could be turned upside down by an employer or landlord who is homophobic or transphobic.
The fact that, legally, some people are currently at the mercy of the hatred and bigotry of others is disgusting and unacceptable.
Taylor Swifts new album release date
The song comes ahead of the 23 August release of her seventh album, titled Lover.
After the moody, rebellious record Reputation, the singer has gone to the light and fluffy side with her new release, Lover, confirming to fans it will be a romantic record.
I think the idea of something being romantic, it doesnt have to be a happy song. You can find romance in loneliness or sadness or going through a conflict or dealing with things in your life … It looks at things with a very romantic gaze, she said.
Speaking on Instagram about the new single however, Taylor said: The video is very worth the wait. Theres a lot going on in the video; I wanted that to be a separate discovery.
You Need To Calm Down lyrics
You are somebody that I dont know
But youre takin shots at me like its Patrón
And Im just like, damn, its 7 AM
Say it in the street, thats a knock-out
But you say it in a Tweet, thats a cop-out
And Im just like, “Hey, are you okay?”
And I aint tryna mess with your self-expression
But Ive learned a lesson that stressin and obsessin bout somebody else is no fun
And snakes and stones never broke my bones
So oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh
You need to calm down, youre being too loud
And Im just like oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh (Oh)
You need to just stop, like can you just not step on my gown?
You need to calm down
You are somebody that we dont know
But youre comin at my friends like a missile
Why are you mad when you could be GLAAD? (You could be GLAAD)
Sunshine on the street at the parade
But you would rather be in the dark ages
Makin that sign mustve taken all night
You just need to take several seats and then try to restore the peace
And control your urges to scream about all the people you hate
Cause shade never made anybody less gay
