3-Month-Old Abandoned at NYC Construction Site

A 3-month old baby boy was brought to safety after his distraught mother allegedly abandoned him at a construction site in Brooklyn Tuesday, law enforcement sources say.

The 26-year-old woman showed up at the construction site at New York Avenue and Lenox Road and tried to convince strangers there to take her child. For about a half hour, the good Samaritans tried to calm her down while keeping the baby safe.

But then the mother confronted some of the construction workers: "She was arguing with the plumbers, yelling and screaming," said construction site supervisor Shlome Stern.

"She was talking about having marital problems and problems with her husband," he said.

The mother was "crying one minute, she was happy one minute, she was sad," said Stern.

A few minutes later, she collapsed.

Stern picked up the phone and called 911, but while talking to police the mother regained consciousness and took off running — without her baby, surveillance video shows.

"She pretty much took off, went off and left the baby pretty much on the site with the construction guys, with the plumbers, with neighbors," said Stern.

The saga ended when police arrived and took the baby from the good Samaritan. The mother checked herself into the psych ward of the hospital, police said. Though there were no signs of trauma, the baby was taken to Kings County Hospital.

Charges against the mother are not likely, police said.
