The Arctic Monkeys decided to take a whole new approach on their latest album Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, by dropping their guitar riffs and replacing them with piano.

And it seems to have paid off, as the boys have landed the top spot in Q magazines album of the year list, beating the likes of Paul Weller and The 1975.

Surprisingly, Mr Weller came ninth with his album True Meanings, while The 1975s A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships fell into third place.

The publication ranked their top 50 records of 2018, with Lets Eat Grandma coming in second place for their Im All Ears, and Anna Calvis Hunter taking tenth.

But it was the Arctic Monkeys who came out on top – and we couldnt be more pleased for them.

Earlier this year, they spoke about their inspirations behind the album, and how the piano gave them more ideas than a guitar ever could.

Chatting to the BBC, frontman Alex Turner said: The guitar had lost its ability to give me ideas. Every time I sat with a guitar I was suspicious of where it was gonna go.

I had a pretty good idea of what it might be, which is completely contrary to what I felt when I sat at the piano. It might have had something to do with some of the stuff I was reading and films I was watching around then.

He added: I think it started with the idea of science fiction and the worlds that are created in it or the idea of space travel, time travel or whatever it is, is used to put out an idea about the world were living in.

Since then, the 32-year-old has opened up about the seventh track, The Worlds First Ever Monster Truck Front Flip, and how it was written after a viral video.
