Barrettes remind me of the good old days when I used to beg my mom to style my hair "half-up, half-down," which essentially referred to her swiftly lifting a small section of my hair from the crown and securing it with a clip. But boy, did my barrettes get more exciting with age. They went from thin, skinny metal bars to ornamental little things with bows. They became full-on fashion accessories. I matched them with all my outfits and, on the more vibrant days, coordinated them with butterfly clips. Barrettes were my jam.

As they make their return in 2020, they're bulkier and more geometric. Some come in lucite, some are big half-circles, and some are decorated with pearls and shells. Barrettes say a lot about your personality, too. Over the past few months, face masks have emerged as an effective way to slow the spread of the coronavirus. The CDC began recommending cloth face masks for public use back in April, and since then, they've become a common sight in restaurants, businesses, and gyms. Guidelines are slowly evolving as doctors learn more about the virus, so if you're still confused over when and why you should wear a face mask, keep reading; we'll talk about the right kind to buy, how to make sure your mask fits correctly, and what else you can do to protect yourself and others.

The Difference Between Surgical Masks, N95 Respirators, and Cloth Masks

Let's differentiate between the types of face masks you see most commonly: surgical masks, N95 respirators, and cloth face masks. Surgical masks are thin paper masks that are intended to obstruct the flow of germs and pathogens from the wearer to the people around them (not the other way around). N95 respirators, on the other hand, are thicker, more fitted, and more effective at blocking transmission of viruses and other particles in both directions: from the wearer to others, and from others to the wearer.

N95 respirators are typically intended for healthcare professionals, who are required to undergo training to ensure correct use. Currently, the CDC does not recommend that the general public wear N95 respirators and says that even healthcare providers should only wear them in medical settings.

Cloth face masks, however, are now advised for use in public spaces. The CDC recommends the following for cloth face masks:

  • They should fit snugly on the sides of your face. (Here's a hack for tightening your face mask if it's loose.)
  • They should secure with ties or ear loops.
  • They should have multiple layers of fabric.
  • They should allow you to breathe comfortably, without restriction.
  • You should be able to wash them in a washing machine and dryer without damaging the shape.

When Should I Wear a Face Mask For Coronavirus?

N95 respirators are not recommended for public use. "We need them in the hospitals. We need them for healthcare providers," said Aruna Subramanian, MD, an infectious-disease doctor and clinical medical professor at Stanford. Hoarding these kinds of essential protective tools increases the danger for doctors, nurses, and first responders, who are already at higher risk of infection.

The CDC is now recommending the use of cloth face masks in public areas. These reusable masks are considered most effective at blocking the transmission of the virus from the wearer to others, although new research is now showing that they may also provide some protection to the wearer. It's essential to wear face masks in public areas, particularly because 40 percent of COVID-19 cases may be asymptomatic, according to a CDC estimation. By wearing a mask, even if you aren't showing symptoms, you lessen your likelihood of passing the coronavirus on to someone else. Lupita Nyong'o is mourning the loss and honoring the life of Chadwick Boseman, who died last month following a four-year battle with colon cancer. On Sept. 8, the actress shared a heartfelt statement on Instagram to memorialize her Black Panther costar and friend, paired with a throwback photo of them embracing at the 2019 Oscars. "I write these words from a place of hopelessness, to honor a man who had great hope," she wrote. "I am struggling to think and speak about my friend, Chadwick Boseman, in the past tense."

Lupita — who played Chadwick's onscreen love interest, Nakia, in Black Panther — recalled his "quiet, powerful presence" and how he "showed up to every rehearsal and training and shoot day with his game face on," creating an "ego-free environment" on set. After poking fun at Chadwick's "regrettably lame dad jokes," she touched on the late actor's impact on her life and the lives of others. "When I was around Chadwick, I wanted to be better, less petty, more purposeful . . . He cared so deeply about humanity, about Black people, about his people. He activated our pride. By pushing through and working with such high purpose in the films he chose to commit to, Chadwick has made the infinite his home."

I write these words from a place of hopelessness, to honor a man who had great hope. I am struggling to think and speak about my friend, Chadwick Boseman, in the past tense. It doesn't make sense. The news of his passing is a punch to my gut every morning. I am aware that we are all mortal, but you come across some people in life that possess an immortal energy, that seem like they have existed before, that are exactly where they are suppose to always be – here! . . . that seem ageless . . . Chadwick was one of those people.

Chadwick was a man who made the most of his time, and somehow also managed to take his time. I didn't know him for long, but he had a profound effect on me in the time that I did. When we came together to make Black Panther, I remember being struck by his quiet, powerful presence. He had no airs about him, but there was a higher frequency that he seemed to operate from. You got the sense that he was fully present and also somehow fully aware of things in the distant future. As a result, I noticed that Chadwick never seemed rushed! He commanded his time with ease . . .

And he put in the work with all of us. He showed up to every rehearsal and training and shoot day with his game face on. He was absorbent. Agile. He set the bar high by working with a generosity of spirit, creating an ego-free environment by sheer example, and he always had a warm gaze and a strong embrace to share. His large hands would descend on my shoulders and give them a squeeze that relieved me of the tensions I did not realize I was holding. Chadwick's hands were strong enough to carry the weight of the film and free enough to clasp mine when I needed it.

He was impeccable with his word. I never heard him complain – and there were definitely some things worth complaining about! Princess Beatrice’s Wedding Dress, Loaned From the Queen, Will Be on Display at Windsor Castle

Calling all royal fanatics, you'll soon be able to see Princess Beatrice's beautiful wedding dress up close and personal, if you're planning a trip to the UK, that is. On Monday, the palace announced that the wedding dress Beatrice borrowed from her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, will be on display at Windsor Castle as of Sept. 24.

For her small, quiet wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi on July 17 2020, Beatrice chose a special dress to match her intimate, private ceremony. The short-sleeved gown she wore is a vintage design from Norman Hartnell and was loaned to Beatrice by the queen, which she famously wore back in the 1960s. The dress was tailored to fit Beatrice and her modern style under the direction of Angela Kelly, personal adviser, dresser, and curator to The Queen, and British fashion designer Stewart Parvin.

Want to Lose Belly Fat in a Month? It’s Possible — Here’s How to Do It

Thirty days may not seem like a lot of time, but a lot can happen in a month: you could get married, win the lottery and quit your job, or traipse around Europe on a life-changing vacation. More realistically, you can use 30 days to get stronger or, if you're looking to shed belly fat, lose inches and see results.

Although you won't be able to completely transform your body or even lose more than a few pounds in a month, you can jump-start your weight-loss journey and be well on your way to achieving your goals. Just be mindful that while you can lose weight in a month, you can't specifically target your belly; there's no such thing as being able to spot-reduce fat (your body decides where the fat comes from — yay, genetics!). We tapped registered dietitian and ACSM-certified personal trainer Jim White, who owns Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios and helps clients reach their weight-loss goals, for insight on how to lose belly fat in 30 days.

How Much Weight You Can Lose in 30 Days

Jim said people can healthily lose half a pound to two pounds a week. In a month, that could add up to four to eight pounds lost. Since one pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, to lose one pound a week, you would have to burn approximately 500 extra calories a day. This can be achieved through eating in a healthy calorie deficit or working out to burn extra calories (or a combination of both). Other lifestyle factors also play a role. Getting enough sleep will ensure your body recovers well and that you'll be energized for your workouts the next day. And too much stress increases the stress hormone cortisol, which can increase your cravings for caloric refined carbs and comfort food, which will prevent you from losing weight (especially in your belly). Make sure, in addition to eating in a calorie deficit, that you're also getting at least seven hours of sleep a night and managing your stress.

You can also lose inches in 30 days. "Just in my own 15 years of experience in working with patients, I have seen some lose up to five to 10 inches in a month from losing four to eight pounds," Jim told POPSUGAR. Keep in mind those five to 10 inches aren't just from your belly; those are full-body measurements from all major areas, including your waist, hips, chest, arms, legs, shoulders, and neck. He added that the inches lost depend on if you are weight training, what kind of cardio you're doing, how much water you're drinking, and how many calories you're eating.

How to Get Results in 30 Days

It takes a multipronged approach to see results in 30 days. Jim advises doing cardio for 30 to 60 minutes, three to five days a week. The goal is to burn 500 calories a day; this can be achieved through cardio, eating in a calorie deficit, and getting in more steps. He also advises strength training two to four days a week. Not only does strength training also burn calories, but it helps build lean muscle, too, which burns more calories at rest.

NASM-certified personal trainer Sydney Eaton, head of fitness and programs at PK Coin App, said that high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, can also be an effective way to burn fat fast. I Did This 5-Minute Stretch Routine For 2 Weeks, and My Low Back Pain Is Almost Gone

Working from home while dealing with a foot injury has been pretty hard for my body. I sit at a computer all day, but I can't get loose with workouts, walking, or running the way I'm used to. Even low-impact workouts like yoga have been tough to do consistently. From the start, it's been rough from a mental health perspective (cooped up in my house and I can't work out?!), but after almost four months, my body started to feel the pain too.

It was worst in my lower back. Sitting at my desk, I could just feel my back locking up; even arching my spine caused a sharp pain. It hurt, and it was scary — I'd never had back pain before, and my regular workout routine, the one thing I thought might help, was off-limits. My options seemed limited, but just putting up with this until my foot healed was not going to work.

Sometimes my foot felt OK enough to do gentle yoga, and that's how I found out that a few key stretches did wonders for my stiff back muscles. The best part?
