Chanel's creative director, Virginie Viard, continues to bring the famed fashion house into a youthful and experimental new era. While always paying homage to the brand's signature boxy bouclé skirt suits, the Fall/Winter 2020 collection seemed to reference Anna Wintour's first ever cover for American Vogue — the 1988 November issue, featuring model Michaela Bercu and photographed by Peter Lindbergh.
That iconic '88 Vogue cover had Bercu styled in a black Christian Lacroix Couture Fall 1988 jacket with a large, multicolor beaded cross on the center of the bust. A very similar beaded cross design is referenced heavily throughout Viard's collection for Chanel Fall 2020.
Many of the new season bouclé co-ordinating sets featured small beaded crosses on the center of the bust, as well as multicolor beaded cross necklaces, bracelets, and details on embellished pouch bags.
