It’s been an agonizing two years of watching and waiting for fans of the Cloverfield series.

But in the early hours of this morning Netflix answered their prayers and delivered the long-awaited third film in the Sci-fi franchise produced by JJ Abrams, despite being rumoured for an April release on the streaming service.

However, it seems that the wait didn’t necessarily add-up to critical acclaim, as within hours of it being released on the streaming services the film had been absolutely mauled by reviewers.

The verdicts were so bad that the film went up with a 0% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Not exactly a great start (but, also not the end of the world).

The general consensus was summed up by The Hollywood Reporter‘s John DeFore, who called it: ‘A trainwreck of a sci-fi flick bent on extending a franchise that should have died a peaceful death almost exactly one decade ago.’

‘The Cloverfield Paradox may be a splash for Netflix, but it’s a dud as a sci-fi thriller,’ wrote Collider‘s Matt Goldberg, while The Guardian‘s Benjamin Lee went for the jugular: ‘The Cloverfield Paradox is an unholy mess.’

All in all, the critics weren’t happy – though a couple of hours in two positive reviews did slip in to the mix.

However, it seems that the film is shaping up to be something of a hit with fans, meaning Netflix may just choose to ignore anything and everything the critics say.

At the time of writing, the film has achieved an audience score of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes, while IMDB already has a rating of 6.7 stars on its official page for Paradox.

The film is expected to be one of Netflix fandom hits this year. Having stalled at every possible final hurdle for two years whilst under the Paramount Studios umbrella, rumours of a deal being struck to hand over the film to the streaming service have proven to be true.

It comes not long after it was revealed that Cloverfield four (currently titled Overlord) has already finished filming and is now slated for a release in October this year.
