*Warning: Spoilers for Ma movie below*

Octavia Spencer steals the show in new film, Ma – which is out now.

The film, which sees her befriend a group of school kids before becoming creepily obsessed with them all, covers a string of topical issues, including racism, bullying, obsessive behaviour and our relationship with social media.

All packed in one hour and 40minutes.

In one terrifying scene, Su Ann (Ma) chains the youngsters up, before covering teenager Darrells (Dante Brown) face with white paint – stating there isnt room for two black people in their crowd.

And speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, Dante explained how important it was to keep that in the film.

I think the movie is very psychological. And I love it, the 19-year-old said. I love the way horror movies are moving and I love the way they shot this film, the way they embodied this moment.

Because it showed in her bullying, her trauma, that she felt she didnt get her moment to be “the only one”. So its a psychological, racial thing.

But those psychological, racial things make the movie real. Those are everyday things that go on, so theyre meant to scare you in the scary movie. All of these things are put in there for a purpose. And its really to start a conversation.

However, despite being one of the most thought-provoking moments of the film, he revealed he was actually asleep during shooting.

It was crazy, he told us. Most times when [my character] was going through all the face painting stuff, I was asleep.

Octavia Spencer in Ma

Despite winning a string of awards, including an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for The Help, Ma marks the first time Octavia Spencer has landed a leading role in a film.

And she absolutely smashed it as creepy Su Ann.

Lifting the lid on what the 47-year-old was like to work with, Dante continued: Octavia is very vocal about what she needed, as far as energy, every single day. She was very vocal on what was needed.

She taught us a lot about balance – work, play, working hard, playing hard. She took the work very serious. And it was great to be a part of this.
