The doors to Downton Abbey have been nudged open just a bit more, as the official spin-off film creeps closer and closer. Just a few weeks after the first trailer was released, nine new character posters featuring the key cast have been sent out, featuring everyone from Lady Edith to the Dowager Countess in luxurious repose.
The new posters are classical portraits of the characters in and around Downton. Lady Mary and the Dowager Countess stand in their finery in one of the homes nicer rooms, while character pairs like Thomas and Andy and Mrs. Patmore and Daisy hang about in the kitchen, standing expectantly near a table full of cakes. And not a single water bottle is in sight.
The new film, written by original series creator Julian Fellowes, follows the characters in 1927 (“Were modern folk!” Herbert exclaims in the trailer) as they flock back to the grandiose Edwardian manor, preparing for a visit from King George and Queen Mary. Its an extraordinary affair, one that brings everyone, even Carson, back under the same roof again. But even in the midst of all the excitement and glamour, everyone is dealing with their own personal drama; Lady Mary, for example, is contemplating leaving Downton for good, which could have a damaging ripple effect on the rest of the nearby community. “Downton Abbeys the heart of this community, and youre keeping it beating,” Anna tells her in the trailer.
But there are also tantalizing new dramatic beats. Thomas, who spent much of the series being tormented by his sexuality, is, potentially, entertaining a romantic prospect, and is seen kissing a mystery man in the trailer.
Directed by Michael Engler, the Downton Abbey movie will hit theaters in September.
