We last saw Steve Owen being engulfed in flames as the car that he crashed blew up in EastEnders and his fate was sealed. However, in the wake of characters like Den Watts and Kathy Beale returning from the dead in Walford, returnee Tamzin Outhwaite refuses to rule out Martin Kemp joining her in heading back to the soap!

Mel will arrive back in coming scenes and is on a mission relating to her son – whose father was the late Steve. And when we sat down with Tamzin, she broke our hearts by revealing that Martin would be up for a return in a heartbeat if Steve weren’t dead! Can’t we overlook this one? Tamzin is certainly determined to try!

She smiled as she said: ‘I did ask (show boss) John Yorke if there was any way! I have watched that scene again and again and watched that car blow up – it cut to Phil and then to Steve – and I wondered how long that cut was. He could’ve got out in those three seconds!

‘I saw Martin at an awards thing and told him I was thinking about coming back and he said that if he hadn’t been killed in that car he’d be back like a shot! So that’s such a shame! Other people have come back – it’s not beyond the realms, but I wouldn’t bank on it!’

Meanwhile, Mel admitted that she was so glad to be back among friends on the show – and fans can’t wait to see Mel in scenes along with Phil Mitchell and Ian Beale once more. It’ll be like the early 2000s all over again.

She enthused: ‘I have so many good memories – I am buzzing about being back. It’s a lovely atmosphere here, especially right now. I did a couple of big scenes with Steve early on and it takes a while to get up to speed. You have to learn huge amounts of dialogue each night so it’s taken me a bit to get back into the swing of that. Steve and I would run stuff beforehand – it’s so quick here and people here pull it off brilliantly. It was scary but Steve was amazing and so has Adam.

‘I have been working very closely with Tish (Letitia Dean, Sharon) who is just a very funny and strong woman on and off screen. It’s been delightful so far, I also did my first scene with Lorraine Stanley, who plays Karen Taylor who I didn’t know at all – she’s a proper character and I love that. Mel also does some hanging out with Billy and some new characters too. I’ve also been working with Patrick Bergin – and another Irish person who forms part of that family…’
