In 2017, Elon Musks SpaceX company held the worlds first two Hyperloop Pod competitions. On Sunday, July 22, at Space X in Hawthorne, teams from universities around the world will compete in a third event.

In 2013, Musk published his proposal for the Hyperloop in a 57-page white paper. The dream of a revolutionary, high-speed ground transportation system has led to several design competitions. Several Hyperloop system tracks have been built since Musk made his proposal. Here is what he envisions:

The first two competitions focused on design and speed. The July 22 competition is focused on maximum speed and deceleration without crashing.

Here are three of the teams among the 20 that will be competing.
WARR Hyperloop teamOrigin: GermanyWARR won the first two competitions. Its prototype in the first competition went about 60 mph; in the second it reached 200.The team comprises more than 40 students; its news release from June said the team hopes its prototype will reach speeds close to 370 mph this time.The prototype is made of carbon fiber and propelled by electric motors that can generate 350 horsepower.
HyperXiteOrigin: UC IrvineIn the first competition in 2017, HyperXite placed in the top 5 for its overall design and was the fastest American team. Its prototype has reached speeds of over 200 mph.The prototype features magnetic braking and uses compressed air to levitate its skis to glide the pod on the track. The technology has been described as working like an upside-down air-hockey table.
SwissloopOrigin: SwitzerlandIn the second competition, the Swissloop pod, called Escher, placed third.Escher was propelled by compressed air and used magnets on skis for levitation. This year, the team has a new pod, called Mujinga, that will be powered by four electric motors.Mujinga Kambudji is the name of Switzerlands fastest female sprinter.The team comprises 18 students.
