LA 2028 chief executive officer Gene Sykes, who played a leading role in Los Angeles securing the 2028 Olympic Games, is resigning his position but will continue to have an advisory role and join the organizations board, LA 2028 announced Tuesday.

In addition to being instrumental in Los Angeles successful bid to host a third Olympic Games, Sykes also oversaw the transition of LA 2028 from a bid committee to an organizing committee.

As CEO of the LA 2024 and LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Candidature Committee, Sykes was instrumental in helping to bring the Games back to the U.S. for the first time in a generation. Since the IOCs historic decision to award Los Angeles the 2028 Games, Sykes has worked with Wasserman to oversee the organizations successful transition into an organizing committee.

“On behalf of all of us at LA28, I want to thank Gene for his friendship, his leadership, and his passion for seeing the Games return to his native Los Angeles,” LA 2028 chairman Casey Wasserman. “We are grateful for Genes contribution to the next chapter of Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic story and appreciate the diligent work hes done to build our organizing committees foundation. We are well positioned for our journey ahead.”

Sykes will return to Goldman Sachs where he was global co-head of mergers and acquisitions and chairman of global technology, media & telecommunications investment banking until joining the bid committee in 2015.

“Working with Casey and the rest of the LA28 team has been a remarkable experience,” said Sykes, who will transition January 1. “I am proud of our accomplishments and look forward to continuing to support the mission of LA 2028 as the Olympic and Paralympic Games come to Los Angeles.”

LA 2028 has no immediate plans to fill the CEO position, a move due in part to the 11-year window between when the IOC awarded Los Angeles a third Olympics and the actual Games. A majority of venues for the 2028 Games are either already in place or planned for.

Sykes transition must be approved by the LA 2028 board, a vote which is considered a formality.
