Michael Moore has had enough. On Thursday, the documentary filmmaker released a trailer for his upcoming project, Fahrenheit 11/9, a fiery rumination on the election of Donald Trump and how it has torn the country apart.
“How the fuck did this happen?” Moore ominously narrates.
The trailer is a nightmarish carousel of Trump B-roll, featuring snippets of the current president speaking at rallies, signing executive orders, and exiting the elevator at his hotel. There are also interview snippets with a variety of figures, from a very angry man who wants to fight Moore to an agitated Roger Stone, who dares lawmakers to try to impeach Trump. Theres also a brief glimpse at interviews with David Hogg, the Parkland teen who became a gun-reform activist in the wake of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Bronx native who stunned the nation by defeating career politician Joe Crowley in the Democratic primary for New Yorks 14th District.
Like any classic Moore doc, this trailer also teases a few stunts the filmmaker had up his sleeve. In one clip, he can be seen driving a giant truck labeled “Flint water” to the home of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, who came under fire for his handling of the Flint water crisis. (Moore is a Flint native himself.) “Ive got some Flint water for ya!” Moore shouts, unleashing a firehose over the front gate of Snyders home. Theres also a brief look at a photo of a happy Moore with a smiling Jared Kushner, which inspires more questions than it does answers.
In an interview with HuffPost, which exclusively revealed the trailer, Moore called Trump “an evil genius” and said that he hopes the film exposes the “grave danger” the nation is in. When asked if he discovered any glimmers of hope in the making of the doc, Moore gave a strongly worded response: “Fuck hope. Seriously, fuck hope. Fuck despair, too. But fuck hope.”
Wait, what? Let Moore explain: “Hope is passive. Hope gives you permission to let someone else do the work,” he said. “Hope leads people to believe that tax returns, or a pee tape, or the F.B.I., or an adult-film star will save the country. Hope, and the passivity that comes with it, is what helped get us here to begin with. Its the lazy way out. We dont need hope. We need action.”
