There are just two weeks until one of the biggest days in Neighbours history takes place – the first ever gay wedding.

David Tanaka and Aaron Brennan are set to tie the knot and make history for the show. Same sex marriage was only legalised in Australia last December.

But the moment is even bigger than just Neighbours – it will mark the first ever TV gay marriage in Australia.

It is an absolute honour and privilege to be a part of this historic moment, Takaya exclusively told Metro.co.uk. It is truly a special thing to be a part of and to have the first in Australia is something that can never be taken away from Matt [Wilson, Aaron Brennan] or I and thats so special.

The pair have known about the storyline for two years: I saw it as a great challenge and thought it would be a really special moment in my career and it is certainly proving to be so.

Naturally though this is Neighbours, and the big day will not run smoothly, and neither will what comes next as Aarons injury has a big impact on their future.

Does any storyline on Neighbours ever run smoothly? Takaya laughed. But, that is life. Nothing ever goes completely to plan but that is where the interesting stuff lives. In how we get through tough moments, and I think the tough moments Aaron and David go through will help bring tears to the audiences eyes.

But if they can pull it off, there are even bigger things in their future – babies!

Takaya revealed: Matty and I would love to see #Daaron explore having a family and the challenges that brings, and if we (and the audience) hope for it enough maybe we will see it come to fruition. Lets make this happen!

The big day will see Aaron battling his back pain, David having a fall out with his dad, and drama over who will officiate the wedding.

We could never have asked for a better casting than Magda Szubanski [who plays the celebrant]. A figurehead of the marriage equality movement and an icon of comedy in Australia, Takaya revealed. It was a masterclass to watch her work, seeing her test her comic ideas in the rehearsal takes and to bring it all together to nail it when they called action was impressive.

Her character is, as is her niche, a larger than life character who brings quite a bit of flare to Ramsay Street.

But while the big day is marred by setbacks, their future could possibly look a little uncertain too, as Aarons back injury continues to plague him and he looks for ways to mask the pain.

Now that David and Aaron are married the storylines will be how the couple deal with any issue that arises, Takaya assured us. I hope that all these issues only strengthen their bond. But you never know on Neighbours, someone can always go too far.

The gay wedding airs on 3 September at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.
