Saturday Night Live Introduces Michael Keatons Julian Assange in Celebrity Prison Cold Open

Celebrities

Saturday Night Live distanced itself from Mueller-fueled cold opens for a second week, but celebrity political impersonations are still the order of the day. The weekends latest saw none other than Michael Keaton join the ranks of Alec Baldwins Donald Trump, Ben Stillers Michael Cohen, and Robert De Niros Robert Mueller, with the Batman star taking on a bearded Julian Assange behind bars.

The episodes opening moments made explicit a focus on fewer Trump sketches going forward, as MSNBC narration stated “Now that the Mueller report turned out to be a big fat zero, were back to prison shows.” From there, a gaggle of inmates (played by Chris Redd, Kenan Thompson, and Kyle Mooney) compared misdeeds, until a well-dressed woman played by Kate McKinnon entered the scene, identifying herself as indicted Full House star Lori Loughlin.

After a few digs at Loughlin and her familys white-collar college crimes, Pete Davidsons Michael Avenatti graced the scene, rattling off his own laundry list of bizarre alleged crimes. Enter the weeks biggest headline—WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, now behind bars. “I attacked the U.S. military,” Keaton bragged. “Im an actual James Bond supervillain—and Im one step away from destroying the goddamn moon!”

Not exactly Saturday Night Lives sharpest political skewering, but Weekend Update got in a few shots at Assange, too. “It was so satisfying to see an internet troll get dragged out into the sunlight,” Colin Jost joked of Assanges heavily-photographed perp walk carry. “You can be lord of darkness on the internet, but when seven cops have you pinned to the sidewalk, you cant be like, I summon the power of e-mails!”
