Star Trek 4 may look a lot different to its predecessors – and not just because of improvements in CGI.

It has been claimed that Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth have walked away from negotiations on the sequel, with talks of a deal falling through.

Pine, who has played James T. Kirk since Star Trek in 2009, and Hemsworth, who plays his father George Kirk, were in negotiations to return to the fourth film in the franchise, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, the actors and the two companies making Star Trek 4 – Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media – have walked away from the table.

The report claims that Pine and Hemsworth, who are both making big money in the DC and Marvel Universes (as Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman and Thor in the MCU respectively), are asking studios to stick to deals they insist they have in place.

The studios are allegedly trying to get Hemsworth and Pine to take pay cuts, as Star Trek just doesnt make that Marvel money.

The third installment, Star Trek Beyond, made $343 million (£269m) globally on a budget of $190million (£149m), with the franchises biggest earner, Star Trek Into Darkness, making $467 million (£366m) – far less than the usual take-in of over $700 million (£548m) which the Marvel films rake in.

It is believed Pine, 37, has been signed up to the fourth Star Trek since he made his deal for 2016s Star Trek Beyond, while Hemsworth has been attached to the project since its announcement in 2016. The 35-year-old was thought to be joining the fourth film in a time-travelling storyline after playing George Kirk in the first films prologue.

Both actors are represented by the same agency – Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles.

It is unclear if a settlement will be reached, or whether the Kirks will be recast.

Negotiations with returning cast members Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg and John Cho are all expected to go ahead.

Metro.co.uk has contacted reps for Pine and Hemsworth for comment.
