Q: Your feelings on the issue of kneeling for the National Anthem. @Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady.
A: “You have to have respect for everyones opinions. … #Sports for me has been the most unifying part of my life. … Never forget that.”#MIGlobalpic.twitter.com/IAS5ZIGOik

The anthem protests started when then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the anthem in the 2016 preseason. A couple players followed, but the issue reached its peak this past season when the president weighed in.

President Trump said at a rally in Alabama, “Wouldnt you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, Get that son of a b—- off the field right now. Out. Hes fired. Hes fired!”

The comments, followed by tweets from the president, sparked outrage throughout the league.

Even Brady, an avid Trump supporter, did not like the presidents comments at the time.

“Yeah, I certainly disagree with what he said. I thought it was just divisive,” Brady said on “Kirk & Callahan,” via Ryan Hannable of WEEI.
