Stephen Fry quit as host of the Bafta Awards after 12 years at the start of this year.

Having fronted the annual awards ceremony since 2001 – with a break in-between – Fry announced his decision on Friday 5 January.

But why did he quit as Baftas host?

The national treasure announced that he would be stepping aside to let someone else ‘take the BAFTAs on to new heights and greater glories’.

In a statement, Fry said: ‘Every one of the twelve BAFTA film award ceremonies that I had the privilege of hosting has a place in my memory. The mixture of glamour, glory, drama and – occasionally – embarrassment and hiccup holds a unique place in the British film calendar.

‘Over the last two decades I have especially loved watching the emergence of new young film talent behind and in front of the camera.

‘But after so long a time I felt it only right to stand down and let others take the BAFTAs on to new heights and greater glories.

‘What fun it will be to watch BAFTA 2018 without my heart hammering, mouth drying and knees trembling.’

Fry went on to thank ‘all the production staff, Amanda Berry and her wonderful BAFTA colleagues, the BBC and all those who helped make every year so enjoyable’.

Joanna Lumley was announced as his replacement today, during the nominations reveal.

Florence Pugh, Josh O’Connor, Tessa Thompson, Daniel Kaluuya, and Timothee Chalamet have been named as the 2018 nominees for the EE Bafta Rising Star award.

Past winners have included Kristen Stewart, Tom Hardy, Tom Holland and Juno Temple, who was on hand to help announce this year’s nominees along with Edith Bowman.

Florence was the star of 2017’s British thriller Lady Macbeth, winning Best Actress at the British Independent Film Awards (Bifas); Josh himself also won at the Bifas for his work in the stunning God’s Own Country.

Daniel Kaluuya has found fame after a breakout in the box office smash Get Out, and will next star in Black Panther, while Tessa Thompson too the female lead in Thor: Ragnorak in 2017.

Timothee Chalamet has been sweeping recent awards ceremonies thanks to his performance in the critically acclaimed Call Me By Your Name.

The EE Rising Star award is the only Bafta that is voted for by the public, and 2017’s winner Tom Holland revealed after his not-so-surprising win that he didn’t actually vote for himself but instead ‘voted for Ruth’ Negga.
