The filmmaker who was previously set to direct Bad Boys For Life has revealed he quit the anticipated sequel after clashing with Will Smith creatively.

Joe Carnahan was originally on-board to direct the third installment of Will and Martin Lawrences blockbuster action caper.

However, he departed the project in September 2017 leaving Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to fill the directors seats.

Breaking his silence on his decision to quit Bad Boys 3, Joe explains how he felt staying would be an injustice to the original story he wanted to tell.

In an interview with Collider, the 49-year-old explained: Heres the thing. I love Will, hes a great guy. Its just, you get to a point where … listen, I always say this…

Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, you find me a motherf****r in the modern era thats walked away from movies with those guys and is still working in some capacity.

He continued: I just know myself, man. And I thought what we were doing at that point was the law of diminishing returns.

I wasnt servicing the story that I was really excited about telling, that the studio had greenlit. And again, this isnt to throw shade at Will — its your face on the poster, its your name on the poster, you need to do things the way you want them done.

Joe, who is best known for directing Smokin Aces and The A-Team, also revealed how he budgeted for a $12 million (£9.2 million) action sequence to take place at the end of the movie, but isnt sure all of his original ideas has remained in the final script.

The filmmaker said: I think theyre doing a portion of it — I had a sequence where theyre on a Gunbus, which is a German motorcycle. They changed it, now its like a sidecar, not a good idea, whatever [laughs]. Its one of the greatest.

In February, Will and Martin – who plays Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett respectively – were spotted filming a high-speed action sequence while riding a tandem through the streets of Atlanta, so it looks like Joes idea might come to fruition after all.
