Caltrans moved mountains of mud, water and debris off the 101 Freeway near Montecito after a devastating mudslide killed 21 people and buried homes, vehicles and everything else in its path.

The department that manages the state’s highway system completed the cleanup of what it called 12 feet of mud in only 12 days, and now the 101 Freeway is open between Ventura and Santa Barbara.
