Within the A Star Is Born cinematic universe, is it safe to presume that Jackson Maine has topped the Billboard charts at one point or another? Or that Ally, after her fast ascent to stardom, has had a few chart-topping albums of her own, cementing her place in pop history with ample booty bops and ballads? Either way, we can now rest assured knowing that their real-world counterparts—Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, as if you didnt know—just landed a top album of their own. The soundtrack to A Star Is Born has debuted at No. 1 on the latest Billboard 200 chart, according to the music outlet, marking Gagas fifth No. 1 album this decade and, shocker, Coopers first-ever.
Gagas new record makes her the top female artist to achieve that many No. 1 albums this decade, bumping out Taylor Swift (who has four). The album moved the equivalent of 231,000 units in the week of Oct. 5 to Oct. 11; of that sum, 162,000 were in album sales. Per Billboard, its the biggest release week for a soundtrack in more than three and a half years, beating a record previously held by the first Fifty Shades of Grey album, which debuted at No. 2 in 2015 with 258,000 units. According to Billboard, A.S.I.B. is already the third-biggest-selling soundtrack of the year, trailing behind the absolutely insane successes of The Greatest Showman (which, though released in 2017, has sold a staggering 1.26 million units in 2018, of a total 1.35 million) and Black Panther: The Album (which sold 223,000 units).
In a nice historical nod, this is also the second A Star Is Born soundtrack to go No. 1. The 1977 version, starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, was the top album for six weeks from Feb. 12 to March 19, 1977, Billboard notes.
Cooper and Gagas version has held up the historic series quite nicely, earning critical acclaim and, thus far, $135 million at the worldwide box office. Its already the anticipated front-runner in a slew of categories at next years Oscars, including best actress, best actor, best original song (presumably for “Shallow,” though the ballad “Ill Never Love Again” has potential), and—duh—best picture. The film has also earned this earnest and extremely long Instagram caption from Anne Hathaway, which is a prize in and of itself. Its the film to beat in every way!

Gaga made her Venice Film Festival arrival in style: sitting on the edge of a boat, wearing a black Jonathan Simkhai dress. Her pinup hair and makeup, along with the corset style of the dress, was a fair warning to all of us that she was prepared to show the world that not only could she play the role of a classic movie star, she could very well look the part, too.Photo: By Jacopo Raule/GC Images.

Gaga wore a Ralph & Russo gown for the films Toronto after-party. Many of the actresss press looks have been pulled from couture shows, which most celebrities will save for larger events like the Oscars. For Gaga, though, putting on a couture gown as her fourth look of the day for a post-screening red carpet is all part of the movie-star gig.Photo: By George Pimentel/Getty Images.PreviousNext
