Forget intellectual property—the new TV gold rush is securing top talent for rich overall deals. Such is again the case with Westworld creator-showrunners and husband-wife production team Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who leave behind lucrative gigs with Warner Bros. TV to join Amazon for whats said to be a five-year deal.
Deadline reports that the delivery empire and streaming service shelled out “low-to mid-nine-figures” for Nolan and Joy to create and produce series exclusively for Amazon Prime, atop an existing development deal for sci-fi tech drama The Peripheral. Amazon CEO __ Jeff Bezos__ has reportedly been clear in his goal to create the next Game of Thrones, and with that shows creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff off making new Star Wars, swiping the Nolans is probably the next best way to get there.
Fortunately for fans of HBOs Westworld, at least, the two will remain creative leads and showrunners of the enigmatic android drama for “multiple additional seasons.”
“Jonah Nolan and Lisa Joy are two of the most talented and inventive creators in the business,” Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke said of the new mega-deal. “They have mastered the art of working in tandem as well as individually on so many fantastic projects across film and television. They each bring their own unique storytelling abilities to the partnership, creating unforgettable characters in addictive and compelling worlds.”
