Avengers: Infinity War is Marvel Studios most ambitious movie ever, and its looking to have paid off. Its currently on track to achieve the biggest opening weekend in history.
Much like the Mad Titan Thanos is collecting those Infinity Stones, Infinity War has been raking in a ton of money in presales and those last-minute ticket purchases over the weekend, giving it an estimated $250 million domestic opening over Thursday night to Sunday, according to Variety. That would be the highest domestic debut of all time. Its in good company with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jurassic World, The Avengers, and Black Panther, as the latest in a small group of just six films in history to cross the $200 million mark in their first weekend. The original Avengers opened with $207.4 million. Black Panther followed hot on its heels with $202 million in February, and continues to break records as its theatrical run continues.
Variety also notes that, with Infinity War, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has now made $15 billion globally, and shows no signs of slowing down. Its the MCUs biggest and most-hyped superhero blockbuster ever, with two separate supergroups of heroes finally meeting for the first time, the payoff of the series much-teased biggest bad finally making his tall, purple debut, and a bold ending that throws the entire cinematic universe into uncertain waters. It also has the most characters of any superhero movie ever: A single scene features more than 30 of them.
