Disney/Marvels Avengers: Infinity War cleared the $300 million mark at the domestic box office in five days, a feat equaled previously only by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in December 2015,making both movies the fastest to that threshold.
Yesterday, Infinity War grossed an estimated $23.5M, down 5% from Mondays $24.7M. Its running U.S.-Canada total stands at $305.9M. Infinity War is easily the best Tuesday ever for an MCU title, beating Black Panther ($20.8M), and for a May Tuesday, besting 2012s Avengers ($17.6M, May 8). Infinity Wars weekdays are very robust, but the reason why we dont see them breaking say $30M (Force Awakens owns the Tuesday record with $37.3M) is because theres still a number of kids in school: ComScore says there arent any K-12 schools off, and only 8% of all colleges are out.
This weekend, analysts expect Infinity War to clear $100M-$125M. On the high end thats a 51% dip. In 2012, Avengers eased 50% in its second May weekend with $103M, while Avengers: Age of Ultron declined 59% in its second weekend in May 2015 for $77.7M.
Originally, Infinity War was scheduled to open this weekend. But after it moved up to April 27, no other major studio replaced it with an uber-wide release, so were left with a trio of counterprogramming titles.
MGM and Lionsgates Pantelion Films have the remake of the Goldie Hawn-Kurt Russell movie Overboard, this one toplined by Mexican star Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris. Playing in close to 1,600 theaters and making a play to Derbezs Hispanic fans, the expectation is that this modest low-teens-budgeted comedy will perform on par with Derbezs How to Be a Latin Lover, which opened to $12.2M.
Focus Features has Jason Reitmans reteam with actress Charlize Theron and screenwriter Diablo Cody, Tully, at 1,300 locations. The pic, which was the Sundance Film Festival surprise screening this year and also played the Tribeca Film Festival, is expected to make $3M-$4M. Critics are enjoying Tully at 94% fresh. The dark comedy follows Theron as a woman who after having her third baby bonds with her trippy night nanny played by Mackenzie Davis.
Lastly, Dean Devlins Electric Entertainment is paving its way into the distribution business with his Brian De Palma-like crime noir Bad Samaritan, which was made for a modest budget.Cineplex is handling the Canadian release. The movie follows a pair of burglars who stumble upon a woman who is being held captive and victimized by a notorious, powerful kingpin. David Tennant, who played Kilgrave in Netflixs Jessica Jones, is the bad guy here.
