Aziz Ansari Is Making a Netflix Comeback With New Comedy Special

Celebrities

Well, Aziz Ansari is back. On Netflix, to be more specific. On Monday, the streamer dropped a moody surprise trailer for his upcoming comedy special, titled Aziz Ansari Right Now.

Directed by Spike Jonze, the special arrives a little over a year and a half after Ansari was accused of sexual misconduct by an anonymous 23-year-old woman in an article published on Babe.net, who claimed Ansari sexually pressured her during a date. In a statement released shortly afterward, Ansari claimed their encounter was consensual, though he added that she had texted him the next day to say she “felt uncomfortable” with him. “I took her words to heart and responded privately after taking the time to process what she had said,” he wrote.

The allegation came out just days after the majority of Hollywood wore black to the 2018 Golden Globes in solidarity with the organization Times Up, at the height of the industry-wide sexual misconduct reckoning. After releasing his statement, Ansari largely avoided the spotlight. A few months later, he began cautiously stepping back into the public eye, sitting courtside at a Knicks game with Chris Rock and making a surprise stand-up appearance at New Yorks Comedy Cellar. That eventually gave way to a full-on comedy tour in the fall of 2018, titled Working Out New Material, in which Ansari criticized collective outrage and political correctness. However, he apparently has not explicitly referenced the allegations in the Babe.net story, only obliquely referring to it as “that story” during a set in Philadelphia.
