The Berlin International Film Festival, also known as Berlinale, has confirmed that there will be no dress code when it comes to women’s shoes on the red carpet this year.

Referencing 2015’s #flatgate, which saw the Cannes Film Festival turn away women who were not wearing high heels, Berlin festival director Dieter Kosslick said: ‘I’m not going to turn away a woman wearing flats … or a man in high heels.’

‘The Berlinale is a festival that wants to embody democracy,’ the festival said in a statement,’mutual appreciation and respect for others have been part of our self-image from the start. The current debate shows there is a need for action and we hope with our Safe Space Policy to actively contribute to that.’

It is thought that festival organisers have coordinated hotlines for visitors to report cases of discrimination or harassment they may experience or witness during the event.

The festival has also organised a host of number of panels and discussions discussing the issues raised by the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements and debates.
