Having first shot to fame in 2015 on BGT, the ride to chart success seemed destined to be fast and furious for Calum Scott; however, it seems fate had other ideas.
Preparing to release his debut album nearly three years after he first captured our hearts with his powerful performances on the juggernaut variety show, the 29-year-old singer/songwriter has revealed that he had to throw out everything he’d written for album number one as it wasn’t true to him anymore.
Taking inspiration from his idols – Adele and Sam Smith to name but two – the Yorkshire lad threw out a tonne of material just last year and went back to the drawing board, producing songs that spoke about his journey and his life.
Enter If Our Love Is Wrong, his lead single off of his Only Human LP, and a song which is deeply personal and touching on so many levels – in fact, Calum says the tune is his ‘coming out song’.
Sitting down with Billboard, he explained what the song (and album) mean to him, saying: ‘If Our Love Is Wrong is, quite simply, my coming out song. As I was trying to wrap my head around my sexuality and was starting to learn about songwriting, and that my honesty and my authenticity came from my personal experiences and writing about stuff that genuinely bugged me or upset me.’
Speaking about his time writing the hauntingly beautiful track, Calum revealed he hadn’t told his father he was gay at the time – something which jarred with the spotlight being shone on his personal life.
He explained that his anxiety was reaching new heights over the worry, and it wasn’t until he sat down in a songwriting session shortly after the ‘panic’ started that he blurted it out.

‘Talking to those boys and telling them that I was gay, I mean, I was sweating. My heart was in my mouth. I was shaking, because it was that terrifying to me to talk about my sexuality. They didn’t judge me – they were there for me, and they really did help me turn the corner with my sexuality and with my songwriting.’
Calum admitted he was worried for a long time that coming out as gay would ruin his career but he has been thrilled with the public reaction and he is now confident in his sexuality.
He said: ‘It’s such a personal message to be confident, because it hurts me to know that other kids might go through what I went through and lose all that time to fear.’
Only Human is available to purchase in store and online now.
