Acclaimed actress Maureen Lipman CBE is returning to the cast of Coronation Street – but she is playing a completely different character this time as Tyrone Dobbs tracks down his grandmother Evelyn Plummer following the tragic death of his mum Jackie.
Long term viewers may remember Maureen playing fearsome Rovers manager Lillian Spencer back in 2002, who rubbed up staff and customers alike the wrong way as she ran the pub with an iron fist. But her new role in the soap is unconnected to the previous character.
The soap is not revealing how Tyrone comes to meet Evelyn or what kind of character she is but since the departure of Blanche Hunt, there has been a notable battleaxe shaped void on the Street. Could Evelyn fit the bill?

It certainly seems that way as she will be ruling the roost at number 9 and getting right under Fizs skin as she makes herself comfortable – could Tyrone regret tracking her down?

Speaking of her arrival in the show, producer Iain MacLeod enthused: I am beyond thrilled that we are introducing such a great new character, played by someone of Maureens pedigree. Evelyn is eye-wateringly withering and will add a fresh dollop of northern humour to the show as she turns Tyrone and Fizs lives upside down.
As well as being known for the BT adverts in the 1980s, Maureen has had a number of film, TV and theatre roles, not least of all parts in The Pianist and Educating Rita.
She is currently appearing in new a one woman show at Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Up For It is playing the Assembly George Square Theatre until 12th August.
