Coronation Street is set to get a new super villain terrorising the people of Weatherfield, and its going to be someone we know and love.
The new serial killers turn to the dark side will be sparked by the huge collapse of Underworld, which will see the roof cave in and a beloved character die. At first it looks like an accident, but it later becomes clear its the work of a criminal.
Producer Iain MacLeod explained to metro.co.uk that our new super villain will be born out of this disaster.
The factory collapse will eventually see the coronation of our next super villain, he told us. This is the beginning of creating the next iteration of the corrie bad guy.
It would have been a lot of fun to have a play with Pat Phelan and I never got to. Wed never try to recreate that character because he was so unique – were trying to design a new, properly Corrie through and through villain. The factory collapse will be the start of that process.
Hes keeping tight-lipped for now as to who the murderer will be, but he said think of big Corrie villains of the past and this one will be up there on that scale, and will be a slow burn of a long standing character becoming an out and out criminal.

I wont tell you who it is – were a long way off that yet, he teased. What I have always liked about Corrie is the ability to have villains like Hillman and Phelan who come in and burn bright and also the more complicated, long range villain like Mike Baldwin – ruthless, self serving and looking out for number one.
Were designing a character in that latter type who can stay long term as an antagonistic just messing up lives.
By going with this character on this journey – their intentions are good and they rapidly snowball. It will be a very slow burn.
He added that this baddie will be well established by the end of next year, and, like weve already pre-warned be prepared for heartbreak as the revelation will involve a favourite character.
By the end of 2019, there will be an unmistakably new and complicated villainous character on the cobbles, he said. Its about small choices which accumulate. Its someone we already knew.
The catalyst, the collapse of the factory, will cause huge ripples through the community, with Carla taking the blame for the disaster. Her actions will lead to a very important standalone episode exploring her mental health.
Teasing Corries storyline set for 2019, producer Iain MacLeod told Metro.co.uk: Its one of the biggest things were doing in the next year. Were knocking the factory down in March in a colossal big stunt.
It will at first appear to be an accident, but will then be revealed to be a mystery and itll have been some kind of criminal enterprise that causes it all to fall down. Somebody will be dying in said collapse. Im not going to tell you who that is or who pulls the factory roof down.

Its a community story – everyone is out of a job temporarily, there are lots of financial and lifestyle stories spinning off from it. It will have ripples that extend into the next six to twelve months and will eventually see the coronation of our next super villain. This is the beginning of creating the next iteration of the Corrie bad guy.
Scenes air in March 2019.
