Director Ava DuVernay is an advocate for equal rights and strongly believes the film industry is becoming more diverse.

And speaking to Metro.co.uk, she revealed she feels those who have a problem with equality might have a problem with their own self worth.

Ava has just become the first black female filmmaker to receive $100million to put towards the new Disney movie A Wrinkle in Time, and it’s a film that explores diversity not only in gender but in race, and aims to reflect the forward thinking way of today’s society.

On the blue carpet of the European premiere for A Wrinkle in Time in London, the 45-year-old director spoke to Metro.co.uk about the importance of the film’s message and how she is seeing more equality in the industry.

‘The film is all about love and I think diversity is a part of love,’ she said. ‘If you love yourself and you’re confident then you don’t have any problem with other people having equal rights and being in films.

‘It’s a part of being a fully formed human being to know that the person looking across from you no matter what skin colour they have, no matter what their physical ability, no matter what gender, no matter what sexuality and what sexual preference, all of these things are human traits and that no one is privileged to be better than another.’

Ava revealed that hearing she was the first black female director in history to helm a movie with a $100m budget was a happy sad moment, as she believes there should be more diversity.

However she went on to confess that she has seen the industry grow and knows it’s becoming diversified.

She said: ‘It’s bitter sweet. I want many other women to be along side of me and we need to open that door to make sure there’s all kind of story tellers telling all kinds of stories.

‘That’s what our industry should be now and that’s what I think we’re moving towards.’

Ava added: ‘We know there are a lot of people who are not of colour that believe in justice and dignity for all so we come and invite them to enjoy the story

‘It’s about light, it’s about love, it’s about adventure and it’s something for everyone.’

The film premiered in the United States on 26 February and comes out in the UK on 23 March.
