This is not a drill – Disney is developing a live-action movie about an African Princess – and its about time too!

Did somebody just scream Wakanda Forever?

After the worldwide success of Black Panther, Disney has acquired a pitch for Sade, a live-action fairytale film about an African Princess, based on an original idea by Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer, according to Deadline.

This will sound like music to the ears of any Disney fan who may have felt the studio has been missing out on a stand-alone movie based on a princess from the large continent.

So Sade meet Elsa, Ariel, Pocahontas, Belle and while you are there flick a wave over to Jasmine, Snow White and Cinderella.

The project currently has no director attached but is set to be produced by Dope director Rick Famuyiwa.

The story will see Sade, who after learning she has magical warrior powers, uses them to protect her kingdom from a mysterious evil force threatening to undo the life shes always known.

And Sade wont be alone as she will be joined in her badass adventure by the Kingdoms prince, and together they set off to save the kingdom.

The news comes after Disney released the live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, and announced the upcoming remakes of The Lion King and Mulan.

This wont be the first time Shokunbi and Palmer will team up together as the pair both worked on the 2017 short film, Break – a finalist at the Miami Beach Film Festival 2017.

Sade shall join Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog and Black Panthers Princess Shuri as leading black female characters in the Disney universe – although Princess Shuri does not yet have her own stand-alone movie.

Disney saw massive success earlier with the Marvel release of Black Panther, set in the fictional African nation of Wakanda with worldwide box office grosses hitting $1.35 billion (£1.03 billion). Its the third-highest domestic performer of all time at $700 million (£534 million).

Princess and The Frog, which starred Anika Noni Rose as an African-American waitress in 1912 New Orleans, was released in 2009 and grossed $265 million (£202 million) worldwide.
