At long last, Doctor Who fans can feast their eyes on some real, action-packed footage from the upcoming eleventh season of BBC Americas flagship sci-fi program—starring, of course, Jodie Whittaker as the franchises first-ever female Time Lord. We got a first look earlier this week during the World Cup final, but Whittaker didnt get to do much in that teaser, besides coyly smile at the very end. Here, we get to see the Doctor from Gallifrey in action—including climbing a sandy hill, running down a dirt road, looking really freaked out in a cave, and clutching her skull in pain. Fun!
Beyond what actually happens in this sneak peek—courtesy of San Diego Comic-Con—perhaps the more fascinating aspect of the teaser is its look. Ahead of the new season, BBC America gave the series an equipment upgrade, including new cameras, for a more cinematic look. The investment shows even in this brief clip, which is more aesthetically engrossing than any season before it.
Sadly, there is still no set premiere date for the upcoming 10-episode season, but its expected to debut this fall. At the helm will be newly installed head writer and executive producer Chris Chibnall, who is taking over as show-runner for Steven Moffat (also known for Sherlock). As for what the season itself will be like? Whittaker told Entertainment Weekly that its “hopeful and fizzling with wonder.” Added Chibnall: “Shes incredibly lively, shes funny, shes warm, shes inclusive, shes energetic. . . . Shes the greatest friend youd ever want to have as your guide around the universe.” Meanwhile, Whittakers co-star, Mandip Gill, compared Whittakers doctor to Matt Smiths, saying shes “very high energy.” For now, it seems, that will have to suffice.
