After several days of scattered showers and pop-up storms, the tri-state will see widespread rain across the region on Wednesday, bringing the threat of flash floods and a soggy day for commuters.
The extreme mugginess will continue Wednesday morning as those showers push into the region, Storm Team 4 says. The commute will be damp, but the rain will become more widespread, especially in the city, in the afternoon as it moves up the coast and farther east.
With the ground already saturated from previous rain earlier this week, flash flooding remains a concern. Flash flood watches are in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday for much of New Jersey as well as Sullivan and Ulster counties in New York.
The rain will be heavy at times and a passing thunderstorm in some spots can't be ruled out, either, forecasters said.
The showers could linger through Thursday morning, before it finally dries out by the end of the week. By Thursday evening, potential rainfall totals could be anywhere from a half-inch to two and a half inches.
The rain could return again Friday afternoon into Saturday morning before a brighter Sunday and Monday, meteorologists said.
