EastEnders is known for pulling out all of the stops over Christmas and Shane Richie has promised that this years major episode wont disappoint – as it ends on a huge shock that made him worry they had pushed things too far.

As a showdown in the Slaters turns particularly nasty with the revelation that Hayleys baby is in fact Alfie Moons, events quickly spiral out of control, leaving lives hanging in the balance. And fans certainly shouldnt rule out a death, as is the norm in Walford over the festive season.

Promising a huge moment, Shane told Metro.co.uk: There is such a big shock on Xmas Day. Obviously I cant tell you, but even when I read it I went “Oh, you cant do that, you cant do that, weve tipped it over the edge now.” Its just a real, massive cliffhanger on Xmas Day. I will be so intrigued to see the reaction on social media with shock and how everything plays out after that.

Only on Christmas Day could this happen. Why anyone would want to live in Walford I have no idea. But yeah, Christmas Day is massive and Ive been privileged enough to see some of it.

Addressing the details of what could happen, Shane was coy when we asked if it were a death but he added: Without giving too much away, this is a tough one to come back from, after you see what happens. Someones got blood on their hands is all Im saying.

We cant reveal exactly what happens but there are bound to be explosive twists and turns that will see us all forget about our cold turkey sandwiches for an hour.

And Shane has loved being at the centre of it all.

He enthused: Its great. And coming along with the Slaters all being together again and stepping into that – the whole madness!

I had a phone call about this big Christmas storyline, we had Simon Ashdown write it – he was here when I was here and hes gone onto great things. Back in the day, he wrote some big stuff for Kat and Alfie, so to have him back on board was just incredible.
