Max and Rainie Branning certainly look very pleased with themselves as EastEnders has given the biggest hint that they will win custody of baby Abi after seeing off threats from both Cora Cross and Donna Hammond.
The pair have set up a sham marriage in order to persuade everyone including social workers that they are a stable enough family unit to look after Abi but Cora is prepared to fight them every step of the way.
Donna, a close friend of the late Abi, is determined to help Cora beat them and so when Cora hatches a plan, the market trader is only too happy to get involved – and she wastes no time in planting drugs on Rainie.

For a time, this works – with Max enraged and preparing to throw her out. But Rainie knows she has been framed – and with Lisa Hammond leaving the show as Donna, it looks like Rainie may win this round.

As new pictures show Max and Rainie sharing a tender kiss in public as the smile and look at plans for a new home, everything is going smoothly and they are more convinced than ever that they are going to win this custody battle and they confidently look to the future.
But as they bask in their relief and, lets face it, smugness, is there another twist to play out before the end of this conflict? Or are Max and Rainie set to really make a go of things with Abi in their care?
Speaking about her feelings for Max, Tanya Franks said of Rainie recently: There is that thing of course where you cant change either of their pasts or history – theyll have done what theyve done and I know as far as Rainie is concerned that she is willing to give it a go to change – and in this circumstance if she can do that enough and Max can do that enough to get baby Abi with them, theyll just go for it. Rainie doesnt think much about the bigger picture, shell just throw herself in and do it, accept it and deal with the ramifications of it afterwards.
EastEnders airs these scenes on Monday 16th July at 8pm on BBC One.
