EastEnders is set to bring back two iconic original characters after around three decades away from Walford as Mary The Punk Smith and Lofty Holloway are heading home after the sad death of an old friend Doctor Legg.

Linda Davidson and Tom Watt will be back in their roles for a short period of time for the former GPs funeral after he passes away in February.

Metro.co.uk understands that current producer John Yorke signed the stars up some time ago for the sad storyline. The returns are separate from the three big names new boss Kate Oates teased she wanted to sign after taking over.

A source told The Sun: Lofty and Mary The Punk are two of the most memorable characters of the original set of stars. Its staggering to think its been more than 30 years since they were last on the Square but soap fans will be delighted to hear of their comeback.

Both characters left in 1988 and havent been seen on the show since. They were part of the original cast when EastEnders first began in 1985.

Lofty was at the centre of a long running love story with Michelle Fowler, who also returned recently played by Jenna Russell until she was written out earlier this year.

Michelle didnt reciprocate lovelorn Loftys feelings however and ended up jilting him at the altar on their wedding day. They later married after Michelle had the baby of Den Watts but their relationship later broke down.

Mary was a controversial character back in the 80s as her party lifestyle and drug taking put her baby at risk. Linda has stepped back from acting and now runs a social media company.

Meanwhile, Tom is now a sports journalist and makes fairly regular radio appearances.

Dot recently reunited with Doctor Legg and discovered that he is dying, with his sad exit set to bring emotional scenes early next year.
