American author and feminist Roxane Gay has put herself forward to write the upcoming DC Comics movie Batgirl after Joss Whedon dropped out.
Taking to Twitter, Roxane simply tweeted DC Comics writing: ‘Hey @DCComics I can write your batgirl movie, no prob.’
The move comes after Whedon stepped down, admitting that he could not find a story to tell for the iconic female superhero.
In response to Roxane’s tweet, Michele Wells, an executive producer at DC replied and asked her to send an email if she was being serious, to which Roxane replied: ‘Yes I am serious. I will email you.’
The 43-year-old author is most famous for her short stories and non-fiction work including Bad Feminist, in which she explores being a feminist while loving things that to many may seem at odds with feminist ideology, as well as her 2017 memoir Hunger, which detailed the struggles she has faced with her body throughout her life.
Batgirl has been a stable of DC Comics since the 1960s; Betty Kane was introduced into publication in 1961 but she was later replaced by Barbara Gordon in 1967, who came to be identified as the iconic Batgirl.
Whedon’s film was set to be based on Barbara and The New 52 comics by Gail Simone serving as ‘a starting point’; in that timeline Barbara has recovered from a debilitating spinal injury notoriously inflicted on her by the Joker.
The New 52 books show Barbara regaining full mobility years after the attack following experimental surgery, although she is still haunted by the near-death experience.
