Perhaps no complaint against Game of Thrones final season proved so universal as its treatment of direwolves—particularly our favorite good boy, Ghost. Jon Snows loyal companion was notably reduced to static composites, patless goodbyes and one final reunion, but it seems “The Long Night” director Miguel Sapochnik had plans to feature much more Ghost—and a whopping 49 other furry friends.
Keep in mind Sapochnik has been on a tear of revealing wild ideas and shocking deaths omitted from his vision of various episodes, and Ghosts diminished role is a well-known casualty of a complicated production process. All the same, Sapochniks imagination really ran away with him when it came to Winterfells final stand against the Army of the Dead, which apparently included “50 direwolves attacking an undead dragon.”
Speaking with the IndieWire Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Sapochnik—who similarly had to scale back Ghosts involvement in Season 6s “Battle of the Bastards”—suggested that one idea had Jons loyal direwolf leading a pack of others to take down the undead dragon, Viserion. “There were many things that happened that people wouldve been so happy to happen—attacks of direwolves and crazy stuff,” he teased. “At a certain point youre, like, 50 direwolves attacking an undead dragon does not a good movie make. This was stuff we did not shoot; it's part of the process.”
As fiercely as we disagree with Sapochniks opnion on what diminished the episodes quality (the lighting pretty much did that on its own), its at least an understandable storytelling concession. Game of Thrones had never established more than the six direwolves gifted to the Stark children in the series pilot, already considered a rarity south of The Wall.
